Island Update Ending July 23, 2006

Hello again from the wet and foggy northeast. Monday actually was a beautiful day although we did have fog off and on. The temperature was delightful, but it was on the humid side. It certainly was not a fan night. This being Monday we went walking with Denise. Dong brought down a load of lumber so he arrived around noon. He says the quality of wood is getting worse and worse even at the lumber yard where the quality is usually good although on the expensive side. He and Dad, mostly he, completed a couple projects at the 5th Maine while Mom cleaned house.

The heat and humidity finally caught up with us on Tuesday - fan night #2. Parts of the Island were rather breezy and nice, but not here at the house. Today was the TEIA (alias the Club) senior luncheon day. It was very nice, the food was good and the entertainment was OK too. Dad did some work at the 5th Maine with Dong while Mom and the "girls" visited Marge. Since it was hot and we had a good lunch we had popcorn for supper.

On Wednesday Dad went to town, and as Mom puts it he wouldn't let her go with him, on the 0715. The trip went fairly well, but he didn't accomplish nearly as much as he wanted. The most important was getting a haircut which he did accomplish. He was back on the 1215 which was running about 20 minutes late. Mom got ready for Cindy who arrived on the 1515 with Elizabeth and Rachel. The fiasco of the day was picking up a roll of film left to be developed at BJ's. Dad evidently put the film container in the envelope and threw away the roll of film.

On Thursday we walked with Denise as usual. At the end, at the library, Mom missed a step and fell flat, but very fortunately only skinned her knee. Mom and Cindy did some local shopping which started with a phone call from the girls asking for some towels because they were cold. It seems they went for a "walk" and somehow ended up jumping off the end of the pier. No wonder they were cold! Dad mowed some, but for reasons unknown even to him, not all the yard. We did miss what was to be the beginning of negotiations between the city and the self appointed secession group from the island. Without going into the sordid details the city wants public meetings while the secession group wants closed meetings. No negotiations took place.

Friday, Mom and Dad went on a senior trip with Denise to the Yarmouth Clam Festival. They expected there would be all sorts of clams being cooked in all sorts of ways. What was found were clams in a light batter, clam strips and clam cakes. Dad figured he was going to be in seventh heaven. Instead he got a teeny tiny container of fried clams for $9.00. Oh well. Mom went and got a big container of haddock sticks, french fries and a bottle of water for less. It was raining by the time we got back to Peaks on the 1630 boat in fact it was pouring and windy. By the time we got to the golf cart we were so wet that it didn't matter that the seats were wet. It turned out to be a driving rain with a westerly wind which resulted in a big leak in the master bedroom. We knew about the leak, but not how big and how bad it is. If it isn't one thing its another.

Saturday was pretty much an all day long rainy day with fog. Heavy fog too, heavy enough for them to cancel the Peaks to Portland swim. There were a few yard sales and the Bracket Church Fair, but mostly it was just a very wet day. At night Mom and Dad went to the Schooner Fare at TIEA as the guests of Millie. An unknown person gave her 10 tickets. It was a good show, but we both had trouble understanding many of their lyrics.

Sunday looked promising so at 0800 we all headed up to the Lions Club for breakfast only to have a flat tire on the way. By then it had started to rain so, since we were close to church and the 0815 mass, we decided to go to then rather than at 1000. After Mass we walked to the Lions Club, had breakfast then walked home. Yes it had stopped raining but we did have showers off and on all day long. Cindy and Dad went back and changed the tire on the golf cart. Fortunately we have plenty of spares. The girls went off to the movies in town and the rest of us sort of hung out. We went up for lobsters at 1700 ,but they only had three when we wanted five. We have put off lobster until Monday night.

And that completes another exciting week on Peaks Island.

Love, Mom and Dad
