Island Update Ending August 31, 2002

Weather: Highs ranged from 80 to 65 with lows from 53 to 63. We did get some rain to the tune of .82 inches during the later part of the 29th. For the month we had 1.16".

On Sunday Stephen & Company departed on the 1800 boat. Monday I worked on the basement and trimmed one (the easy one) hedge. Tuesday we caught the 0945 boat to take Pam and Christian to Manchester to catch their plane home. I measured it again and it is still 100 miles to Manchester. Lunch at the airport. On the way home we stopped at the Commissary at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. We caught the 1735 boat and got home about 15 minutes before Pam got home in Fredricksburg.

On Wednesday we went to a demonstration of the Kotzschmar organ at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland City Hall. It was neat and was followed by a tour of the organ backstage. That was really interesting. After that it was off to my annual heart checkup. Everything seems to be fine, but he is going to run another stress test in a couple weeks. By Thursday we had to finish cleaning and straightening up for "Coffee and Muffins at a 'Mystery' location on Peaks Island." Without going into how it happened we turned out to be the mystery location. Rain arrived and later on Tim, Diane and Shadow (the dog) arrived on the 1915 boat a day early. Everything they wanted to do coming up from Maryland got rained out so they called to see if they could change their reservations at the Peaks Island Inn to a day earlier. Why not!

Friday arrived and we had some 12 ladies for coffee starting at about 0830. (This was part of the Portland Parks and Recreation stuff) We had a grand time, everyone present seemed to like the location and I made some 5 pots of coffee which was all consumed. Our company hid while all this was going on. I had docent duties during the afternoon which completes them for me this year. We are only open on weekends after Labor Day. Saturday Mom and I went to town to run some errands and bring down the rest of the stuff from the car. We came back on the 1215 and it was jammed with people and bicycles. Later Jeanne and Dick arrived so the house is filling up fast again. There never seems to be a dull moment. On yes, for those of you who know Dong, he has stopped by a couple times and for those of you who know Sharon and Kathy, their huge old island car went up in flames this week in what we hear was a very spectacular fire. They had just filled it up with gas and gas on the island is 2.06 a gallon. The firemen allowed that since the tank was full it only burned with a swoooosh whereas if it had been nearly empty it would have exploded.

There was something else I wanted to slip in here, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was so I guess that is it for this week. Love, Dad
