Island Update Ending June 19, 2005

Let's get the weather out of the way. Monday it was hot and humid to the point we almost used a fan when we went to bed. About 0400 on Tuesday wind, rain, thunder and lightening and cold moved in. With the exception of the thunder and lightening the whole week continued this way with highs at 50 or the very low 50s and setting records for low highs. We used the furnace most of the week. Good thing we got oil at $2.22 a gallon. We went in town almost every day in the rain (not heavy), drizzle, fog and cold. Sunday the sun finally decided to return and it was a beautiful cool crisp day.

Monday was Senior Luncheon day at the Fifth Maine. Not too many people, probably because of the heat, but we had a very good time and as it turned out the dining room was cool and comfortable. Tuesday Dad caught the 1000 to get the van inspected. It took awhile and cost a bit, but the Chrysler is now officially a Maine car. Caught the 1630 back after running a few errands.

Wednesday was more errand day plus Mom got her hair cut at a price that has bothered her ever since. We caught the 1000, managed to accomplish all the errands we had to do and caught the 1630 back. This was also Farmer's Market day, but not a good day for it, although we managed to pick up a few plants. Thursday we just hung out although we did get things done in the house. We now have one section of wall in the Pineapple room painted with the same paint we used at home in the living room. We can't decide if we like it or not, but we will continue on. The big item was at long last Dad replaced the toilet seat in the upstairs bathroom. It took a few days of using Liquid Wrench to loosen the nuts, but now it is a done deal.

Friday we were off on the 0815 to make a Commissary run and to get fish and chips at our favorite place in Brunswick. All went well until lunch when we discovered our place was closed. Bummer!! We have another place that is on the river, an old factory, and the river was really running so it was pretty nice. We ordered too many things and ate too much, but otherwise it was great. Back on the 1630 again and we were pooped. We cannot take this going to town every day particularly in the rotten weather.

Yes, Saturday we were off again on the 0815 to go to the Blue Rock Quarry to see a demonstration on building stone walls. Quite interesting and fun, but very wet. We came home on the 1115 (new schedule started today). The sun came out late in the afternoon and we actually saw an abbreviated sunset in amongst the clouds and blue sky. We hoped to get by on Sunday without the furnace and by gosh we did! Mass was at 0815 (new schedule started today) and Dad was docent at the Fifth Maine for 3 hours. We also got the lawn mowed, thank goodness because it was getting pretty long and we will be gone for a week.

We leave for Fairfax on Tuesday, flying. We will be off line from later tonight until we get home. Dad plans to take this computer in first thing in the morning to see if they can fix the very irritating noise we have been getting since last year. As usual we do not rush into things. That is it from here on Peaks for this week.

Love, Mom and Dad
