Island Update Ending October 16, 2005

Oh yes, this week started out with rainy, foggy, misty, drizzly weather. Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Dick departed on the 1115 boat. The rest of us went over to the gift shop by the Lions Club, then went home and decided to go in town for lunch at Susan's for fish & chips. So we caught the 1245. We bought lobster for supper and then ran into Jeanne and Dick at the ferry terminal. They hadn't left for the lake having done some shopping and had lunch. What a surprise. Back to Peaks on the 1515 boat just before ti really started to rain again. Cooked the lobsters under the porch. They were very good and probably the last for this season. Yes, Liverpool again tonight. Mom and Dad decided to let Mo and Laurie win as this was their last night here.

Tuesday we were up early to catch the 0815 to take Mo and Laurie to the airport. Mission was accomplished so we headed off to do some of our own many missions planned when we go to town. Ate breakfast, actuarially had a muffin and coffee at Tim Hortons. That is a very strange fast food place to get something to eat. Then off to BJ's to drop off film, and a couple stops down town before having lunch at the Village Cafe where Dad finally got his fried clam fix for the summer. Back on the 1415 where we did chores and fell asleep at various times. Popcorn for supper, but no Liverpool -- we have run out of players. New ferry schedule today along with the winter ticket rates. Big reduction, we had forgotten about.

On Wednesday we slept or stayed in bed just a little late. Mom did the washing and started cleaning out the flower beds as evidenced by the pretty colors over the bank. As for Dad he tried to finish a few things previously started, mowed the lawn and worked at the desk. Pretty exciting huh? We were off to bed early, but for some reason Dad was still at the desk at 2300. We went off walking with Denise Thursday morning, the first time in a week or so. That was good, we needed to be up and out. We kind of did what we felt like doing today so it is hard to tell what as accomplished. ..Dad did finish mowing the lawn.

Bad weather is upon us again. On Friday we woke up to light rain, but the rest of the day was okay until the real rains started at nightfall. We brought in some of the porch furniture today -- we do this little by little until we leave. Then we moved the big chair that had been in the pineapple room when the season started from the back bedroom into our room and put the rocking chair from our room into the pineapple room. Mom went over to visit Millie and I went and visited Richard for an hour or so. He no longer knows who I am, but he accepts me and knows I was a naval officer.

The cruise ship Constellation came in Saturday morning in the rain. It is the same one that was anchored out front when we had our tea and couldn't see because of the fog. It rained from light to heavy all day long and at night the wind really picked up so it is hard to see out the very wet windows. As for Mom and Dad they just did misc. things such as completing things already started and in some cases getting organized to head home.

The wind howled all night long as well as all day on Sunday. It never let up for a moment, always blowing from the West with temperatures in the low 50s so that wasn't too bad. This week is when we really needed our weather station. We have noticed one thing, the house shakes very little, which is rather unusual considering the winds we are having. We didn't have our usual Sunday morning breakfast, but ate in the Rectory after Mass a Sunday morning ritual here on the island in the winter. We gave Richard a ride around the island and then visited Marge for a while. Incidentally, Millie is back in the hospital with some complications from her gallbladder operation. I was docent this afternoon, but not being too busy I spent my time securing the building for the winter and then it was home for a supper of pizza followed by watching the Patriots loose. As bedtime is approaching the wind is still howling, but fortunately it is not real cold so although the house could be warmer it is not unbearable like some years. Our original plan was to leave this week, but Dad wants to see them take down the historic 5th Maine flag for preservation next Sunday and then we may be able to get flu shots before we leave. The end of the season really gets complicated.

And with that it is the end of another week.

Love, Mom and Dad
