Island Update Ending September 14, 2003

For a peaceful week this has been a busy one.  On Monday Mom had a doctor's appointment for her ear so we were off on the 1000 boat.  It was the usual long appointment and it turns out her ear is doing fine which is jolly good news.  After that we ran errands at a number of places including ordering a rug for our lazyboys to sit on.  We had moved the rug where they are over on top of the big rug because it is wearing.  Chinese for a late lunch, caught the 1630 boat and had a supper of pop corn while watching Monday night football.  Tuesday was a beautiful day.  It is so quiet and peaceful here we didn't get up until 0830.  I salvaged some wood at the 5th this morning while Mom washed clothes.  I don't know what we ever did before we had a washing machine here.  This PM I worked with Dong at the 5th replacing a broken handicap hand rail.  I wanted to make it straight, but the original construction is so far off that this was impossible.  It does look much better.  I froze working up there and when I got home Mom said it had been too hot to sit on the front porch.  Island living!

Wednesday: chilly night, but a beautiful day.  Dong came over about 1000 with some food from his sister.  This time it was egg rolls plus Banh Xeo, pronounced Bun Chow.  He also refers to it as Vietnamese pizza, no similarity with our pizza.  Yes, I ate everything and loved it.  Of course I'm crazy about egg rolls anyway.  Mom can't believe I ate or even liked this Vietnamese food.  I finally did do some work around the house, namely sanding and painting the front steps.  They were pretty bad.  Thursday was another nice day of cleaning and painting around the house.  I finished the front steps (2nd coat), painted part of the basement floor, started work on replacing the final window upstairs & misc. other things.

Friday was another day of doing things around the house.  I rebuilt the frame and installed the final new window upstairs.  I still have to manufacture pieces for the 2 sills so the windows seal properly.  I also painted one of the white chairs on the back porch red. I used the new Krylon paint for plastics.  Mom cleaned and neatified the pantry.  Still lots and lots of things to do around here.  Saturday was yet another beautiful work day around the house.  I have now finished replacing all the windows upstairs plus one in the kitchen for a total of 19 new windows.  Now I am going to reseat the kitchen windows so the wind doesn't blow through quite so bad.  As for Mom she did her floor washing thing for the last time this season.  Dong came by this morning with a big bowl of Pad Thai (phonetic) his sister made for us.  It tasted really good and we also had it for dinner.  This is our 3rd oriental meal this week.  At lunch we walked up and got hot dogs at the hot dog stand up from the ferry.  We sat on a bench down by the water and ate them while watching 9 geese, the ferry arrive and swarms of people getting off the ferry.  (2 weddings today) We pretty much shot the morning and lunch time so it is a wonder we got anything done today.

And finally we have a day of rest.  With Mass at 1000 and eating, the morning was shot.  This afternoon Mom took care of her gardens (a never ending task) and I painted the shower room floor plus some, the other white chair is now red, and I finally finished fixing the pillar on the back porch.  I started this a year ago last spring.  We ended up having Pad Thai for supper tonight.  Mom really likes fixing these meals from Dong's sister.
