Island Update Ending September 19, 2004

We started out the week being busy busy busy. On Monday we caught the 0815 with the car, a blueberry muffin and coffee and a very long list. We completed 98% of our tasks and caught the 1735 back. We had so many things, many of which were heavy, that we brought the car back too. There was a place in Scarborough, Anjon's, that Dad wanted to eat which turned out to be quite good. In going there we went by a chocolate place where Lenny the world's only life-size chocolate moose made out of 1700 pounds of chocolate lives. We have been wanting to see him so we went back after lunch. One big pile of chocolate. We also dropped by a discount furniture store where we found a couple neat wicker rockers, very comfortable, which could be good on the upstairs porch. If we happen to decide they might be a good idea they will probably be gone, so don't anyone hold their breath. We also got new curtains for the dining room, but we are going to take them back (they look too white) and worry about them in the spring. We stopped at the Coast Guard Exchange to get a couple bottles of sherry and ending up spending $125.00 and that's the way the day has gone. Oh yes, we also picked up the new long hedge trimmers all fixed and ready to go.

Tuesday was a quiet day around the house. Mom struggled with the curtains in the dining room. Dad tried out the new hedge trimmers which work really well. Dad thinks they were worth the wait. He also mowed half the lawn and did a bunch of work at the desk. He has been very tardy with his paper work this summer. Wednesday was busy, but calm. Mom did a bunch of baking and talked to Diane and Dad worked mostly at the 5th on fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.

On Thursday Dad was off to town on the 1000 to run errands and take the car in again and was back on the 1415 boat. Mom stayed home and got the place organized between phone calls and visitors. Diane and her friend Jennifer arrived on the 2015 boat, a big treat since it was the people ferry. We had Mom's baked haddock for a late supper.

Friday was a good day although overcast and threatening rain which didn't happen until about supper time. Mom and Dad ate breakfast on the back porch where it was actually a bit on the over warm side. Diane and Jennifer managed to catch the 1245 to town, back on the 1735. Dad finished correcting the fire department deficiencies at the 5th and Mom fooled with meals and read. Lobster was brought back from town and it was very very good again. Lobster has been good this year, although not cheap. We taught Jennifer Liverpool which she adapted to so fast it was worth your life to try to get a card if she wanted it. We may even have to repair the card table after that game. Mom was the winner.

Saturday was a really rainy day that didn't start to clear up until late afternoon. Diane and Jennifer managed to hit the stores on the island and drive around the island in the golf cart all in the steady usually heavy rain. What some people will do. Mom and Dad just stayed home and relaxed. We all went out to dinner at the Cockeyed Gull and had their usual delicious meal. When be came out of the Cockeyed Gull there was nary a car or person moving on Island Avenue. What a wonderful time of year. Tired set in after dinner and everyone turned in rather early.

We had our usual Sunday morning breakfast, eggs, bacon, home fries, English muffins and orange juice on this beautiful, but cold and windy morning. Yes, the heat is on today. Mass is now at 1000 until next spring. We were running a little late so Mom and I took the golf cart to church which the girls came and took (we told them they could) during mass. We were having goodies and coffee in the Rectory when they showed up to give us a ride. I did manage to give half a tour of the island (not much time when one day was lost to the rain) before we had to catch the boat to get to the airport. On the boat we ran into of all people, Dong, who we haven't seen since we first arrived on the island. We or they managed to hit a couple shops before we got to the airport. Mom and Dad caught the 1515 back and settled in to watch football and read the paper. Popcorn was for supper and now we are about ready to go to bed.

It is hard to believe September is more than half over which means we don't have too many weeks left up here.

Love, Mom and Dad
